Flogging Molly at the Fox Theater, Oakland

When I first heard the name “Flogging Molly,” I told myself that that band was not something I’d like to hear. Such a violent sounding name (although I recently learned that in Ireland “flogging” can also mean “to sell”) kept me from enjoying some of what later became my favorite songs, with incredible lyrics and tunes to which I could just Schottische all night.

A Week in Iceland

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to spend a whole week in the south of Iceland, from the capital Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón Vatnajokull (yoh-cull-sowr-lon vaht-na-yohcull). Iceland has fascinated me for a long time for its art, culture, and spectacular natural landscapes.

Postcards from Italy: Roma

A few weekends ago, I and several other students in the Stanford Florence program went on a trip to Rome for a paper assignment. The train ride there was remarkable. I’ve been on several buses and trains and I’m never disappointed with the view. Here is something I saw on the way back from Rome. This country is just nature sprinkled with culture, aging houses and gorgeous cities.

My Summer With a Phoenix: Discovery Green

If someone ever depicted Texas as big, loud and inactive in the current green movement, they could be wrong about two of those things. On June 30, 2011, Houston’s new park, a non-profit organization called Discovery Green (also known as Disco Green), hosted an art car parade and a free concert featuring Beans Barton and the Bi-Peds.
