The suspenseful drama Yellowjackets is returning for a highly anticipated second season on March 26, 2024. The first season of this thriller was a breakout hit, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats with its dark storyline about a high school girls soccer team whose plane crashes in the remote wilderness in 1996.
As the team struggles to survive in the harsh environment over 19 months, they descend into savage clans and sinister secrets that continue to haunt the few crash survivors we meet 25 years later in the present day. The parallel storytelling of the teenage and adult versions of these characters helped make season one so addictively bingeable.
Yellowjackets Season 3 Release Date
Fans simply can’t wait to see what happens next after the shocking season one finale cliffhanger where it was revealed that supernatural elements and occult rituals are also part of this mystery about just what these women had to do to endurealone in the wilderness for over a year and a half. There are still so many unanswered questions about what darkness consumed them and whether they became cannibals to survive.
The show’s breakout star Melanie Lynskey will be returning as the troubled adult version of Shauna, whose unsettling secrets about the past have put strain on her marriage in the present day. Lynskey’s raw, emotional performance was universally praised in season one, so viewers are eager to see her continue to peel back the layers on damaged Shauna.
While a premiere date has been announced for season two, not much else has been revealed about what fans can expect in the new episodes. The writers are hard at work crafting the next chapter of this sinister saga. The cryptic teaser trailer for the new season indicates the action will pick up right where we left off and the danger is far from over for these women.

Will there be a season 3 Yellowjackets?
Since Yellowjackets has already been renewed for a third season as well, we know there is much more story left to tell about the traumatic events that happened to Misty, Natalie, Taissa and the other crash survivors. There’s still so much we don’t know about what they’re hiding and running from all these years later. The mystery clearly only intensifies over time.
The first season premiered on Showtime in the U.S. and on Sky Atlantic in the U.K. Season two will follow the same release schedule, airing first on Showtime with 10 episodes that run approximately 50-60 minutes each. Fans in Canada and Mexico will also be able to stream new episodes on Netflix after they air on Showtime.
As we anxiously count down the days until we can get answers to last season’s burning cliffhangers, the wait for new Yellowjackets episodes is nearly over. Will the disquieting secrets of the past finally be laid bare? Who else might know what really happened out there in the wilderness? Buckle up for a tense, terrifying and totally addictive ride when one of TV’s most thrilling shows returns on March 26.
How many seasons are planned for Yellowjackets?
Season 1 – This first season premiered in November 2021 and ran for 10 episodes on Showtime. It introduced us to the teenage and adult versions of the survivors of a 1996 plane crash, slowly revealing the trauma and secrets they’ve carried with them over the decades.
Season 2 – The second season is set to premiere on March 26, 2023 on Showtime. Not many details have been revealed yet about the plot, but the season 1 finale cliffhanger showed supernatural forces seem to be at play and there are still countless mysteries about what the women endured out in the wilderness.
Season 3 – Yellowjackets has already been renewed by Showtime for a third season, though no release timeframe has been set yet. The fact that there is a 3rd season greenlit shows the network’s strong confidence in the show and that there is much more story left to tell.
Where can I watch Yellowjackets season 3?
As for where you can watch, both seasons 1 and the upcoming season 3 air on Showtime. For viewers in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, the episodes will be available on Netflix after their Showtime debut.
The show was created by writing duo Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson and stars Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci in the present-day timeline, as well as Sophie Nélisse and Jasmin Savoy Brown playing the younger versions of the crash survivors.
So while many details are still tightly under wraps, we know for sure Yellowjackets was envisioned as lasting for multiple seasons on Showtime. Hopefully the writers will give fans some long awaited answers in season 3 to the many chilling mysteries established in the first season of this addictively harrowing and twisty drama series.
Is Yellowjackets based on a true story?
While Yellowjackets is not directly based on one specific true story, creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson did substantial research into instances of survival under extreme circumstances. They looked at a number of real cases where planes crashed or people were stranded in remote locations and had to endure months or years in the wilderness before being rescued.
Specific incidents that helped inform Yellowjackets include the 1972 crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in the Andes Mountains, as well as the story of the Lykov family in Russia who lived isolated in the Siberia wilderness for 40+ years. Like the Yellowjackets team, these groups turned to intense and unthinkable measures just to stay alive from day to day.
The show’s premise of a girls soccer team whose plane goes down in the remote northern wilderness, forcing them into territorial clans as they fight starvation over a year and a half, certainly evokes the life or death stakes of survival stories like those of the rugby team in the Andes or the Lykov family cut off from society for decades.
While Yellowjackets adds its own fictional spin with secrets, lies and supernatural mystery, at its core is an all too believable descent into the primal madness that can occur when humans are pushed to extremes by isolation and a relentless struggle to simply see another day.
Beyond these real survival sagas, Nickerson and Lyle also looked at Lord of the Flies and women’s boarding school novels to inform their tale of the inner darkness and savagery that can be exposed when the fabric of society disintegrates. The writers focused on creating complex characters facing traumatically dehumanizing choices.
So while not based specifically on any one true event, Yellowjackets is grounded in the very human truth of just how unspeakable and shocking the measures are that people will embrace just to persevere against all odds…whatever the cost or horror left in the wake of fighting for survival by any means necessary.
The result is a fictional drama that feels eerily plausible – even in its most disturbing extremes – when held up against real-world accounts of plane crashes, wilderness isolation, and the boundary-pushing transformation brought on by the primal quest to simply see one more day no matter what.
This makes Yellowjackets an unforgettably unsettling series that sinks its hooks in and won’t let go. The writers have crafted a thriller that feels uncomfortably believable even when events take a bizarre, paranormal twist, anchoring it in the shocking extremes of human behavior pushed to the furthest edges of endurance against all odds.
