While opening the door, one of his commandos, Sunil Kumar Yadav got injured in the crossfire. He was somehow evacuated safely from the room. Sadly, the terrorists eloped while blasting a grenade into the room.
The operation was hours long. Unnikrishnan fought straight for 15 hours. He chased four terrorists alone and sacrificed his life while fighting with them.
He was even awarded Ashoka Chakra on January 26, 2009, by then President, Pratibha Patil. His mother, Dhanalaxmi Unnikrishnan received the gallantry award.
