86 – Eighty-Six is a science fiction anime series based on Asato Asato’s novel series of the same name. It is written by Toshiya Ono, directed by Toshimasa Ishii, and produced by A-1 Pictures. The series is licensed by Crunchyroll and Muse Communication. The first season is available on several platforms but the second season is only streaming on Crunchyroll.

The story takes place in the Republic of San Magnolia, in the Stellar Year 2148. The Republic of San Magnolia and the Empire of Giad coexisted peacefully for years. To expand its territory, the Empire of Giad started attacking its neighbors. War broke out between the two countries. Initially, the Republic suffered devastating losses to Legions (Giadian AI drone army). Later they developed AI drones called “Juggernauts,” controlled by remote handlers.
The two main characters of the anime are Lena, the commander of Superhead Squadron, and Shin, the leader of Superhead Squadron. Their backgrounds are very different. Lena is an Alba nobility and Shin belongs to the Colorata minority community of District 86. Destiny brings them together. They have to struggle to survive in a period of war.
According to the government, it is a war without casualties but that’s not the truth. The young men and women of the unofficial district, District 86 pilot those so-called AI drones. District 86 is home to the Colorata minority community. the Alba-supremacist government considers them as subhumans. It is not just a light anime. There are heavy elements in the story. The series has a lot of potentials.

It is scheduled to release on October 17, 2021, on Crunchyroll. The episode is named “Glad to be here.” In the episode, Shin and his comrades from Superhead Squadron decide to enroll in a military academy. Everyone is surprised to see Shin’s fighting skills.
