The Newsreader takes us back to 1980s when people were excited about Halley’s Comet, the AIDS crisis was taking hold and the Challenger explosion shocked the world. It gives us an insight into the world of a television newsroom. Sexism, racism and homophobia were creating discrimination inside the newsroom. It shows that the real drama takes place behind the camera. It is less about history and more about drama.

Star newsreader Helen Norville (Anna Torv) is determined to build her crediblity, while an young ambitious reporter Dale Jennings (Sam Reid) is desperate to become a newsreader. Helen is a hardworking woman and people at her workplace consider her as difficult. She faces sexism in a male dominated world. After messy beginning, Helen and Dale will form an unlikely bond.
