Actress Gal Gadot’s Cleopatra role: Everything you want to know

Recently we saw this Israelian beauty in the action-packed movie ‘Wonder Woman 1984’. She grabbed everyone’s attention when she was cast as the “Wonder Woman” back in the year 2017. This month we saw her again in the role of Wonder Woman in the movie ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ which is the sequel of the 2017 hit movie.

The recently released movie was also very important because this movie marked the Hollywood actress’second time working with the director Patty Jenkins. But this won’t be the last time as we are about to see these two beautiful and talented women work again as they are planning a new movie together with Paramount Pictures.

On 12th October the wonder woman actress used her Twitter account to convey the message that she is playing a lead role in the new movie made by Patty Jenkins as she wrote,” As you might have heard I teamed up with @Pattyjenks and @LKalogridis to bring the story of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, to the big screen in a way she’s never been seen before. To tell her the story for the first time through women’s eyes, both behind and in front of the camera.”

How people reacted?

Many people criticized this collaboration and were against the casting of Gadot as the Egyptian queen. Cleopatra was the Egyptian Queen and people believe that an actress from African descent should be cast in this film. People were against the idea of an Israelian actress portraying the role of a mixed-race queen.

The series of tweets came out as people were against it and an account with a name The Afro Nerd is tired of Anti blackness tweeted,” White people keep casting white people to play Cleopatra and ancient Egyptians, but cry when someone cast a black person in a fantasy TV show or movie, make it sense. Also nice to see we still can’t count on white people to cast women of color.”

Apparently, in 1963 Elizabeth Taylor also played the Cleopatra role and she was white and with Gadot playing this role again as a white person annoyed many people. Randa Jarrar, the American writer tweeted,” Yeah, Cleopatra was Geek. I get it.

But casting a Zionist whose family is Polish/Austrian/Czech as the queen of Egypt in 2020? Why not just rewatch the Liz Taylor version?” The Palestinian-German director Lexi Alexander was against it as she said, “I believe we should cast someone like the 3D image they created based on the coin they found with the Cleopatra on it…which means the part should go back to a Black actress.”

What Gadot said in the interview?

This all happened back in October when the announcement was made but recently in the interview with BBC Arabic the Death on Nile actress explained why she took on the role and defended herself as she said, “First of all, you want to be true to the facts then Cleopatra was Macedonian.

” The flawless actress then added,” We were looking for a Macedonian actress that could fit Cleopatra. She wasn’t there, and I was very passionate about Cleopatra,” Gadot told the host Sam Asi that, “To me, as a people’s lover, and I have friends from across the globe, whether they’re Muslims or Christians or Catholics or atheist or Buddhist or Jewish of course.

People are people, and with me, I want to celebrate the legacy of Cleopatra and honor this amazing historic icon that I admire so much.” The Justice League actress also added, “You know, anybody can make this movie and anybody can go ahead and do it. I’m very passionate that I’m going to do my own too.”

Her thoughts on peace

In the later part of the interview when she was asked if she saw any possibility of peace between Israel and Arab neighbors to which the Keeping up with the Joneses actress replied, “I hope so, but we’re there yet.”

She added, “I do think at the end of the day people are people and they just want to live their simple lives in the safest way. They want to have food on their table, they want their kids to be able to go to school and be educated and aspire in their lives. I’m a big believer in diplomacy, and I can only hope that we will have two brave leaders that will bring us there.”
