The story of Maison Ikkoku starts with Yusaku Godai, a bright student who could not get accepted into college the first time and decided to retake the entrance examination once again. But unfortunately, he lives in a dilapidated building with other noisy, impolite tenants, which makes it all the more difficult for him to put more focus into his studies.

And on top of that, a new resident manager comes to live there–Kyoko Otonashi, a gorgeous woman who drives Godai to even more distraction. Yusaku Godai is sure that he is in love with the apartment building manager, but he has bigger fish to fry–his career. But he is very kind-hearted and decides to give up on a promising job interview just to help a lady in labor get to the hospital.
