Rifujin na Magonote’s Japanese novel series Mushoku Tensei: Unemployed Reincarnation is a series which is about a jobless and sad man who somehow reincarnates in a fantasy world while also maintaining his memories, determined to live his new life without any regrets.

The series was very first released in 2012 on the internet as a web novel, the series was confirmed a year later so it can have a printed edition under the Media Factory’s MF Books banner, which featured the drawings by a Pixiv user named Shirotaka.

Yuka Fujikawa’s manga version debuted in the June 2014 issue of Monthly Comic Flapper. The tankobon volumes of the manga were licensed for translation in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment. The original version of the light novels has also been licensed by the same firm. The web book has made many entries in Syosetu’s ranks as the most popular work on the platform.

The series follows an unidentified 34-year-old Japanese NEET who gets evicted from his house after his parents die and fails to attend their funeral. After some contemplation, he came to the conclusion that his life was ultimately worthless, but in an attempt to do something significant for once in his life, he intercepts a speeding vehicle coming towards a gathering of kids and manages to pull one of them out of harm’s way before dying.

When he awakens in a baby’s body, he finds he has been reborn in a realm of sword and sorcery and vows to succeed in his new existence, rejecting his previous name in favor of Rudeus Greyrat.

We also learn two years later in the series that the encounter with Eris has left Rudeus impotent, so he enrolls in Ronoa Magic University at the suggestion of the Human-God. He re-encounters Sylphiette, who cures his impotence, and the two marry soon after. Rudeus rejoins his father’s journey to save his mother, defying the Human-advise God’s and reconciling and forming a connection with Roxy along the way, eventually marrying her.
