The kingdom is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yasuhisa Hara. The manga provides a fictionalized account of the Warring States period primarily through the experiences of the war orphan Xin and his comrades as he fights to become the greatest general under the heavens, and in doing so, unifying China for the first time in 500 years.
The manga has been serialized in Shueisha’s seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump since January 2006 and collected into 62 tankōbon volumes as of July 2021.
The series was adapted into a three-season anime television series by Studio Pierrot. The first season of 38 episodes aired from June 2012 to February 2013. A second season aired for 39 episodes from June 2013 to March 2014. The third season by Studio Signpost and Pierrot premiered in April 2020. A live-action film was released in April 2019. The anime has been licensed for English-language release by Funimation
Plot
As war orphans during the Warring States period of ancient China, Xin and Piao work as servants in a poor village in the kingdom of Qin. The goal is for them to become the “Great Generals of the Heavens” and they train daily for this. A minister one day takes Piao to the palace, leaving Xin behind.
Xin heeds Piao’s advice to travel to another village a few months later when he is on the verge of death. In Qin, Xin meets Ying Zheng, the current King of Qin, who is nearly identical to Piao. Piao served as a body double for Ying Zheng and was fatally wounded in a power struggle for the throne.

Despite being angry at Ying Zheng for killing Piao, Xin decides to seize the opportunity and aid Ying Zheng in ousting Cheng Jiao and reclaiming the Qin throne. After succeeding in his goal, Xin starts his military career as a Qin soldier and then in China’s warring states as commander. His dream is to become the largest general in the world, and he strives for unification to end incessant warfare once and for all.
