To Your Eternity, also known as Fumetsu no Anata e, is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima. She also wrote the celebrated manga and anime movie, ‘A Silent Voice’ The manga has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine by Kodansha. It has also been compiled into fifteen tankobon volumes as of April 2021. It is also an anime adaption that is ongoing.
Plot
The manga follows the story of a mysterious immortal being, which is called ‘the Orb’. It is sent to earth with no form or feelings. But it has the ability to take on the shape of those that leave a very strong impression on it. It first takes on the shape of a rock, then a dying Arctic wolf. In the wolf form, it meets a white-haired boy, who mistakes it for his dead pet. Later, when the boy dies due to an injury, it takes the form of a boy.
Traveling south, the Orb, now in the form of the boy, encounters a young girl named March, who is on the run from a group of people called Yanome. She names him Fushi and feeds him. Later, however, when they are captured by the Yanome and plan to escape, March is killed. Devastated, Fushi parts ways to embark on a new journey.
The manga contains a lot of story arcs, including one where he meets the Beholder, the one who sent him/it to the world. He also learns the purpose of his being sent to earth: to “Preserve the world”. The people he meets further in his journey make him develop his own personality and become more human.
Main Character
The main character of the manga is the shapeless, emotionless immortal being. It is first called ‘the Orb’. It was sent to preserve information and experiences. It takes different forms until it ends up as a boy with white hair. March, a girl he encounters as he travels south, names him Fushi. This is the name that he carries on with.
At first, Fushi is emotionless, but as the story carries on, he learns how to communicate with humans and gain his own personality. In his journey, he encounters many people who leave an impression on him and his personality.
