Warner Bros confirmed that Mads Mikkelsen is the new Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming fantasy movie-series Fantastic Beast 3. Earlier in November, Depp was forced to step down from the film, after losing his libel lawsuit against the UK-based tabloid- The Sun that labelled him a “wife-beater” in a story that referenced his ex-wife Amber Heard’s assault allegation.
What Depp had to say:
Depp announced his resignation on Instagram where he wrote, “ I’d like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their support and loyalty…Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request.”

Jude Law’s reaction:
Jude Law plays the role of younger version of Albus Dumbledore in ‘Fantastic Beasts’ film series. Referring to Johnny Depp’s exit from the film franchise, he stated that in such situations, the actors usually agree with the board’s decision and it is all they can do. Law also said that the whole situation is very unusual and sad, especially as it has happened to the lead role.
Mikkelsen’s reaction:
In an interview, Mikkelsen revealed, “No, I don’t know him. I’ve met him once. I wish I had his phone number, but unfortunately, that’s not the case,”. For the Hannibal star, he has his work cut out for him and try to connect the bridge between Johnny’s performance and what he’s gonna do, making the fans buy him as the new Grindelwald.
The 55-year-old actor further said “Well it’s going to be me, so that’s a difference. No, this is the tricky part. We’re still working it out. There has to be a bridge between what Johnny did and what I’m going to do. And at the same time, I also have to make it my own.
But also we have to find a few links [to the previous version of the character] and some bridges so it doesn’t completely detach from what he’s already masterfully achieved.”
