Lost in the manic excitement over LeBron James’s return to Cleveland, which continues to ripple through the sports world fulfilling fan fantasies of Biblical proportions, is another lost son’s return to his promised land, a return that is equally critical to American Pop Culture.
That son would be Bill Murray, and that promised land is broad comedy.
When the FREEKS production of Annie Baker’s “Circle Mirror Transformation” opens today, director Patty Hamilton expects it to hit close to home— both because of the content of the play itself and the way in which the cast and crew have spent the past month rehearsing.
It’s a tall order— probably futile, possibly absurd— to have to give a lecture on “A Meaningful Life.” Yet each year, in honor of the late Professor Harry Rathbun, Stanford’s Office for Religious Life selects a visiting lecturer to speak on exactly that topic, invariably selling out Memorial Auditorium with people looking for wisdom. This year, the Office chose Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau to deliver this annual “Harry’s Last Lecture on a Meaningful Life.”
