It’s been two days and I think I’m still as struck by American Buffalo as when I left the theater.

Henry V famously begins with an invocation from the chorus to the audience to forgive the inability of the stage to render the vastness and grandeur of the war it seeks to depict. The latest production by Stanford Shakespeare Company might as well neglect this, for this staging captures the subtle violence and manipulation that lies at the heart of the play without needing help from the Muse of fire.
Shout out to all those guys who got their faces on our money for giving us a day to rest after midterms and NBA All-Star Weekend. Only a four day week to clean all the illicit substances from your room before your parents visit!
Oh man. Oh geez. It’s Valentine’s Eve. Either you forgot to get a significant other or you forgot to get something for your significant other. Plus midterms, and that bomb scare. It’s been a rough week. Uncork some wine, buy some overpriced chocolates, and listen/watch/read what a bunch of old dudes have said about love and other Hallmark’s card bullshit.
This is a play about Hell. And love. And memory. And language. It is not comfortable. It is frequently uncomfortable. It’s self-conscious, and sometimes subversive, and sometimes absurd. You should go see it.
Remember the good ol’ days of 1974? Watergate, the Rumble in the Jungle, lots of civil wars and stuff. Everybody did drugs and wore weird clothes, probably. StAR is taking you back to a simpler time, with weird glam rock, shitty Japanese horror movies, and a long poem you probably won’t read.
1993 was a pretty great year. Most of the Class of 2016 was born then. But even taking that into consideration, it was a pretty great year. Take a look at what our contributors have to say about the very best in art, literature, film and music from twenty-one trips around the sun ago.
Editor’s Note: Peyton Manning submitted a number of songs but they were too sad. Russell Wilson did as well, but they were just repeated submissions of ‘And We Danced‘ by Macklemore. We chose to omit both entries.
Three day weekend left you weakened? Now is not the winter quarter of your discontent. If you’re feeling down, start bumping these tracks, even if you’re in Green Library. People will appreciate your verve.
Grammy nominations came out this weekend. Nobody asked us for our votes. Hmph.
