Early life and Professional Life of Dmitry Bivol

Dmitry Bivol’s father was from Soviet Moldova, and he grew up speaking Moldovan (Romanian). Also, Dmitry Bivol’s mother was Korean by birth. After Dmitry’s parents married and graduated, they moved to Soviet Kyrgyzstan. Dmitry was born in Kyrgyzstan and was there till 11.

Early work

In November 2014, Bivol made his professional debut. By knockout, he won his first six fights. Early in his career, Bivol sparred with Jean Pascal, Egor Mekhontsev, and Vyacheslav Shabransky. Furthermore, Bivol trains in Southern California despite living in St. Petersburg.

WBA break a light heavyweight champion

On May 21, 2016, Bivol defeated Felix Valera. Consequently, Felix had never lost a fight before by unanimous decision (119-107, 119-107, 116-111). Valera was dominated by Bivol, who drops him twice using combinations. 

Bivol held the lesser of the three World Boxing Association (WBA) titles. On February 23, 2017, Bivol faced Robert Berridge for the first time. Bivol easily defeated Berridge. Bivol dominated him for four rounds before a technical knockout victory. In round 3, Berridge was knocked out. Bivol cut over Berridge’s right eye at the beginning of round four. The ringside doctor stops the fight after Berridge is knocked out again and severely bleeding. 

Subsequently, on April 14, 2017, Samuel Clarkson defeated Bivol as he made his title defence. A ShoBox show featured the fight as the main event at the MGM National Harbor. 

Bivol once more dominated the fight, knocking Clarkson out twice in the first round. Also, he knocks once more in the fourth with a short right hand. The referee stopped the fight, and Bivol won by TKO despite Clarkson getting up.

Following his victory over Clarkson, Bivol sought to face WBA (regular) champion Nathan Cleverly. He faced Cedric Agnew in a non-title fight on the undercard of Ward-Kovalev II. Clarkson had previously defeated Agnew. 

For the third time in a row, Bivol was victorious by TKO in the fourth round. His victory was once again swift and decisive. In the first round, Agnew was disqualified.

Light heavyweight champion of the WBA

Bivol was Cleverly’s mandatory challenger as interim champion. But the WBA gave Cleverly an exception to face Badou Jack. After Jack beat Cleverly, the WBA ordered a Jack-Bivol purse bid.

However, after WBA (Super) and unified champion Andre Ward retired, Jack decided to give up his title. It is probably to compete for one of Ward’s other vacant titles.

Bivol was promoted from interim champion to full champion as he lost the WBA’s other two titles. On November 4, 2017, he was scheduled to fight Trent Broadhurst in an optional defence at the Salle des Etoiles.

Next, Bivol defeated Sullivan Barrera (21-2, 14 KO) in the 12th and final round. On March 3, 2018, when he faced the most challenging test of his career. Throughout the fight, Bivol was able to outbox and outpunch Barrera. 

Part of a doubleheader, the bout saw Sergey Kovalev defeat Igor Mikhalkin to retain his WBO title. In December 2017, he confirmed the card.

Main Events announced on June 6 that on August 4 at the Etess Arena in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Bivol would defend his title against longtime contender Isaac Chilemba. Isaac is 31 years old and has a record of 25-5-2 with ten knockouts.

At Verona in the Turning Stone Resort Casino, New York, on March 9, 2019, Bivol defeated Joe Smith Jr. by unanimous decision, 119-109, 119-109, 118-110.

Light heavyweight champion of the WBA (Super)

Two days before his fight with Gilbert Lenin Castillo, Bivol got promoted to full WBA (Super) light heavyweight champion on October 10, 2019. At the Wintrust Arena in Chicago on October 12, 2019, Bivol took on Gilbert Lenin Castillo on the undercard.

Furthermore, on February 19, 2021, Bivol faced the #8-ranked WBA light heavyweight contender Craig Richards. It is in the second defence of his WBA (Super) title. 

The fight schedule was on the undercard between Dereck Chisora and Joseph Parker at heavyweight on May 1, 2021, at the Manchester Arena.

Furthermore, on November 22, 2021, there was an announcement that Bivol would challenge Umar Salamov. It is for his third defence of the WBA (super) light heavyweight title on December 11, 2021, at the KRK Uralets, Russia.

A DAZN broadcast card had the title fight as the main event. In October 2021, Salamov was initially scheduled to fight Joe Smith Jr., who held the WBO title. However, the fight was cancelled because Smith Jr. withdrew after contracting COVID-19.

On February 25, 2022, there was an announcement that Bivol would be making the fourth defence of his WBA (Super) title against Canelo Alvarez, the 4-division world champion. Simultaneously, on May 7, in a fight that would be televised as the first pay-per-view offering of sports streaming service DAZN in the United States and Canada. 

The fight occurred because the World Boxing Association (WBA) decided to allow the fight.

The WBA ordered Bivol to defend his title against Gilberto Ramirez. The current top contender and former WBO super middleweight champion. Additionally, Bivol’s promoters, Matchroom Boxing, requested an exemption so that they could fight Joshua Buatsi instead.
