AMD today launched its current line-up, known as Raphael. Almost two years after the release of the Ryzen 5000 CPUs. The Ryzen 9 7900X, the second-fastest model in our study, frequently outruns Intel’s Core i9-12900K.
Internally, AMD still uses the so-called chipset design, which in the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X consists of two CCDs with eight cores each and one I/O die as is well known, the I/O die, which now always includes an iGPU in addition to the new DDR5 memory controller.
AMD advances with the 5 nm process, and the latest chips are with TSMC. Thus, higher clock rates are possible. The Ryzen 9 7950X can operate up to 5.7 GHz in turbo mode right out of the box.
The Ryzen 9 7900X is still having 5.6 GHz. We can already state at this time that our testing. It also produced these clock rates. Users should anticipate a good performance gain thanks to the greater IPC—the significantly raised clock rates.
The enhanced performance does have one disadvantage, though. The TDP of the new Ryzen 9 variants has climbed to 170 W. AMD even stipulates a maximum power of 230 W for the complete package. However, it is still less than what Intel now permits for its processors. It is up to 241 W when under pressure.
Benchmarks for processors
The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X performs 26% better than the Ryzen 5000 generation. The AMD Ryzen 5 7600X has a performance rating increase of over 20% with the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X.
Therefore, it stands to reason that the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X. The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X can’t keep up with the Intel Core i9-12900K. Must rank 9% slower than our test sample.
Similar to and sometimes better than the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X in terms of performance is the smaller AMD Ryzen 5 7600X.
AMD Ryzen 5 7600X + AMD Ryzen 9 7900X
The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X performs better than the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X in this test. Despite the highly modest difference of only 100 points in the 50 runs, the Intel Core i5 12600K remains.
Its advantage over the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X. The Intel Core i9-12900K plays a minor role and cannot compete with the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X.
Usage of energy
Current AMD Ryzen 9 models can consume 170 W. Even if the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X still has a TDP of 105 W. From 142 W to 230 W, the PPT (Package Power Tracking) increases.
Only a 26% improvement over the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is with the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X. A similar performance improvement was seen in the stress test using Prime95. The gaming power usage is much higher because the graphics card reaches more than 500 W.
