The story of Fruits Basket revolves around Tohru Honda, who is an orphan. After coming in contact with Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Sohma, she learned that thirteen members of the Sohma family are acquired by the animals of the Chinese zodiac and are doomed to transform into their animal forms when they are fragile, agitated, or when they are accepted by any one of the opposite genders that are not acquired by a spirit of the zodiac.

This series has been published in the quarterly Japanese shōjo manga magazine Hana to Yume, which is published by Hakusensha, from 1998 to 2006. The title of the series comes from the name of a game that is played in Japanese primary schools, which is mentioned in the series.
