Cryptocurrency has Become a Leading Threat for Cyber-Attacks on Young Adults

With the growing popularity of crypto-currency, cybercriminals are taking this as an advantage to trick young adults into their potential cyber-attack scheme. According to a study at Barracuda, the growing price of bitcoin has led to an increase in the volume of cryptocurrency-related attacks.

What is a cyber-attack?

Cyber-attack is an attack launched by one or more computers against another computer, multiple computers or networks. These can be divided into different types. However, most of the time, the main goal of these is to access or hack a network/computer which can lead to a possible breach of data. If a certain computer data is accessed by someone with ill intentions, possible loss of money, or personal information can do much more harm than we can imagine.

  • Phishing
  • Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) Attacks
  • Denial-of-Service (DOS) Attack
  • SQL Injections
  • Zero-day Exploit
  • Password Attack
  • Cross-site Scripting

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin have become a leading trend and threat to the increasing rate of cyber-attacks. Crypto-currency scams have skyrocketed during the pandemic. Winning gift cards or money are potential common scams that are used to lure adults. Social media has been a co-factor and driving force that leads to such. Direct messages describing the offers available and a time limit can send one into sudden confusion and making rash decisions. Attackers use this tactic as a way to gain passwords, personal information, bank information or any other that can profit them in most ways.

Through social media, messages with a link are provided or sent to a potential victim in hopes that they click them. After clicking it can lead to an insecure website that asks for personal information or malware that can do harm to our systems.

How to avoid cyber-attacks?

Even though crypto-currency is a skyrocketing concept, people should be aware enough to avoid getting scammed. For these, they have to thoroughly search and act. Not trusting unofficial schemes or accounts can prove to be beneficial. Passwords, bank and personal information should not be shared with anyone. If adults continue to be aware, cyber criminals can do little to no harm to them.
