Whoopi Goldberg Apologizes After Comments on Holocaust.

Caryn Elaine Johnson, professionally known as Whoopi Goldberg is one of 16 entertainers in the world to win a Tony Award, an Academy Award, a Grammy, and an Emmy award. She is also the only black woman to have ever won the four awards. She is an incredibly influential personality known for her roles in the films – The Color Purple, Ghost, The Long Walk Home and many others. She is a living legend and an icon, however, recently, the actress found herself in hot water after making some comments on the holocaust.

 What happened on ‘The View’?

Whoopi recently stated on ‘The View’, that the Nazi holocaust of the Jews was, in fact,  “not about race”. According to the Guardian, she also said the following,  “Let’s be truthful, the Holocaust isn’t about race, it’s not. It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about. These are two groups of white people.”

On the show she went on by saying, “You’re missing the point … let’s talk about it for what it really is. It’s about how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, Jews … everybody eats each other.” She serves as a co-host on the show and her opinions regarding the holocaust were met with severe backlash.

Whoopi Goldberg: The Backlash

Due to her comments, Goldberg was suspended from the talk show and the following statement was issued: “Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments,” Kim Godwin, president of ABC News.

According to The Guardian, Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League called her comments on the show as “dangerous”. The Auschwitz Memorial and Stopantisemitism.org also condemned her comments.

Whoopi Goldberg: The Apology

In order to make up for her remarks on the Holocaust, Whoopi Goldberg had the following to say in the form of an online apology:-

On Tuesday, Goldberg opened the talk show by stating the following:-

“[The Holocaust] is indeed about race, because Hitler and the Nazis considered the Jews to be an inferior race.”

“Now, words matter, and mine are no exception. I regret my comments and I stand corrected. I also stand with the Jewish people.”

This comes across as the third public apology from the co-host.

However, for Goldberg, the effects of her apology did not hold for long as she was met with another backlash due to her comments on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. According to the BBC, she said that the Nazis had lied and actually had issues with ethnicity and not race. Due to her opinions, the Oscar winner found herself in renewed controversy.

NOTE- It is important NOT to relate this news with the forced settler colonialism by Israel in Palestine. Israel is an APARTHEID state.
