Steve has one sibling sister named Melinda Martin, both of them attended Garden Grove High School. He went to the University of California, Los Angeles but dropped out at the age of 21.

In 1967, Steve got the job for himself as a writer in “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour”. He won his first Emmy Award for his work in the show, while he first appeared on the show in 1968
