We are all aware of how Johnny Depp would not be working in the third Fantastic Beasts movie. Rumors have said that he won’t be coming in the next Pirates of The Caribbean movie. Now recently, reports say that Disney is reconsidering its decision and thinking about retaining Depp in the series.
Why Depp’s Casting is in Jeopardy?
Few months ago, Johnny Depp lost his libel case against The Sun against an article in 2018 that explicitly called Depp a ‘wifebeater’. Later, o his Instagram, Depp told his fans that he won’t be reappearing as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts movies because he was requested so. Disney reportedly followed the same route, dropping Depp as Jack Sparrow.
The Petition to Reinstate
As the rumors broke out, the decision to remove Depp was not taken well. Petitions to reinstate Depp went all over the internet. The reason is not surprising. The pirates franchise is almost two decades old. Five movies have been out in this span of time and Jack Sparrow is a core character in all of them. Jack Sparrow was certainly the most unique character with his combination of humor and action.
The flavor of the movie that Depp’s character set never left a single time in the franchise. A movie without Depp would certainly leave a certain blandness as at this point, his character is synonymous with the franchise. Not very long ago, Disney was reportedly considering Karen Gillan to play the lead. Later, it also announced a spin-off movie with Margot Robbie as the lead.
The petition to bring Depp back has almost reached 450,000 supporters as of now.
What’s the Current Situation Regarding Depp?
With the Margot Robbie spin off announced, there have been rumors that the cast will be entirely changed, adding that Sparrow will be declared dead. While There have been no official word by Disney about the casting or Depp, it is uncertain that we will see Jack Sparrow. There has not been much buzz about the sixth movie too.
As per Daniel Richtman, ten more projects are in talks, including canon films, spin off films, and TV shows. Currently, Depp is looking to appeal for the lost libel case. Maybe if he wins, the tables may turn. Some reports say that producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney are trying to bring him back.
Nonetheless, there needs to be a proper ending for Jack Sparrow. Even if it means watching him the last time.
