Why The Society season 2 and Altered Carbon season 3 were cancelled by Netflix? Details here.
Netflix’s axe has cut two of its original shows The Society and Altered Carbon. It’s nothing new when Netflix decides to shut down the renewal seasons for many series. They have done it before for chilling Adventures of Sabrina and I am Not Okay With This and so on. Now two major science fiction and drama series The Society and Altered Carbon are put to the list.
Netflix cancelled both the shows in 2020. Fans are wondering why it happened and trying to find the reason behind the cancellation. Well literally some of the reasons are low viewership, high budgets and some includes deadly Coronavirus pandemic. Let’s find what are the real reasons behind the cancellations.
The Society has only 1 season which premiered in May 2019. The society is a teen drama show where a bunch of high schoolers are eventually related with Supernatural powers. They went for a field trip, after failing to reach the destination they returned and discovering their hometown was empty. Why is everyone in the town left, where are they now and what’s the reason behind this? The school kids try to find all the answers.
Well this type of story is not that much new to the viewers. But The Society had become one of the fan-loved teen shows in 2019. Due to the popularity, naturally Netflix was already decided 2 months later to renew the show. The cast members also tweeted regarding their comebacks. But later in August 2020 Netflix announced The Society will not get it’s second season.
The real reason behind The Society’s cancellation is Coronavirus pandemic. Due to lock down the production of The Society was delayed for lifetime which made the production cost unbearable.
Netflix announced: “We have made the difficult decision not to move forward with a second season of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This.” Netflix also added “We are disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by covid….”
The Society’s Allie Pressman aka Kathryn Newton said: “I am so sad that #TheSociety was cancelled. It was a huge cast with such talented amazing actors. I will never forget it…”
Netflix’s Altered Carbon premiered in 2018 and lasted for two seasons. Altered Carbon was one of the critically acclaimed Netflix originals. But unfortunately it got cancelled in 2020.
Netflix blamed Coronavirus again to cut down the show. But there are certain factors of viewership measurement and cost renewal to continue any show. According to some tabloids these two are somehow the cancellation reasons too.
Altered Carbon is based on the 2002 novel by the same name and it is written by Richard K Morgan. Altered Carbon is a story of Takeshi Kovacs, who is a former Soldier. In Altered Carbon’s world, human consciousness can be transferred to different bodies. Here Takeshi is involved in the similar process and ordered to solve a murder mystery.
Altered carbon season 2 was aired in February 2020. In August Netflix announced it will no longer continue the show. Fans l have just started to adore Anthony Mackie in the shoes of Joel Kinnaman on the second season but this did not stay long.
Hollywood tabloid Deadline mentioned: “The streamers standard viewership vs cost renewal review process” are the two real factors Netflix has cancelled altered carbon.
Netflix’s vice president Cindy Holland said in 2018 : “The biggest thing that we look at is, are we getting enough viewership to justify the cost of the series?” Rumours are that Altered Carbon has failed to gain both of the factors. Aso the series’s visual effects and CGI are too advanced which need more revenue.
Altered Carbon was definitely a critically acclaimed show but it didn’t grab a position in 2018’s top 10 most popular webshow’s list.
