Goblin Slayer created quite a stir among the audiences with its very first episode. The first season premiered in October 2018, ending with 12 episodes. Initially rated PG by Crunchyroll, it has got an MA rating now. Since the finale ended with a cliffhanger, fans are waiting for a second season.
About Goblin Slayer
Goblin Slayer began as a light novel series written by Kumo Kagyu in 2016. Two manga adaptations by Kosuke Kurose and Masahiro Ikeno also began the same year which is published in Monthly Gangan magazine. Another prequel manga by Kento Eida, is published in Young Gangan Magazine.
Another spinoff prequel by Kagyu titled Goblin Slayer Side Story: Year One, was published in 2018. A second spinoff Goblin Slayer Side Story 2: Daikatana of Singing Death published in 2019 with further chapters to come.
The story revolves around a group of adventurers who join the Guild and take different jobs to earn money and glory. A priestess, on her first mission, gets into trouble with goblins and is rescued by an adventurer Goblin Slayer, who only wants to kill goblins.
Possibility of a New Season
The 2018 anime primarily covers the light novels by Kagyu. Looking at only Kagyu’s light novels, which has 13 volumes and 3 volumes of side stories, there is enough content to refer to. Producers can make more than two seasons from it. The first season covered volumes 1 and 2 and partially volume 4.
Even after that, there is manga with more than 18 volumes including the spinoffs. So from the context of content, it looks all good.
The movie Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown premiered on February 2020, which covered the fifth volume. The movie can also be taken as an indication that the anime is still under consideration for another season. In an interview, one of the members of the production team did say that there will be a second season and it will premiere in 2021. However, there is no official release date yet.
What Can We Expect in The New Season?
The finale revealed a part of Goblin slayer’s face, with two scars near his chin, as he defeated Goblin Lord and saved his hometown. In the end, it is revealed that he is just a pawn to something big. But the Gods seem to take an interest in him as he refuses his fate to be controlled by them.
The second season would definitely include more goblin slaying. With the Harvest Festival preparations going on, everybody seems to be carefree except Goblin Slayer, who senses a new threat approaching. The second season could feature Dark Elf as the main antagonist who wreaks havoc at the festival. It could cover more of volume 4 and volume 3.
In case the second season has more episodes, we could see it cover 6 and 7 too. Hopefully it happens so, because volumes 6 and 7 go deeper into the characters and it would give a nice progression to the anime series.
