The cast of Spider-Man-
The original live-action Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire, is apparently in talks to come back for the MCU’s Spider-Man 3, along with Kirsten Dunst. Maguire was in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 to 2007 as Peter Parker, the protagonist hero who one day gains spiderlike powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider.
Dunst renders Mary Jane Watson, his best friend and lover. Fans praised Maguire’s performance, and though there were once plans for a Spider-Man 4, they never came to pass.
In the MCU, Tom Holland currently plays Peter Parker, and he’s set to return for a third solo adventure in 2021. Plot details have been kept under curtains, but there have been rumours for some time that, as the MCU digs into the multiverse, past Spider-Man characters could appear.
This was seemingly supported by the news that The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s Electro (Jamie Foxx) will be in Spider-Man 3, and today, news broke that Alfred Molina will reportedly play Doctor Octopus once more. They might not be the only ones to make a comeback.
Per Collider, Maguire reportedly will return for Spider-Man 3 provided Sony and Marvel can reach a deal with him. Talks with Maguire are presumably ongoing, and it remains to be seen when they might be completed. Meanwhile, the report indicates Dunst is already set to return as MJ in the film. This also comes with the rumour that Andrew Garfield will reportedly return as well for the first time since The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Rumours and everything to know about the Movie-
Sony previously debunked the rumours that Maguire and Garfield would be back, but now it looks like the studio merely wished to keep them quiet until things were confirmed. While Maguire’s return in Spider-Man 3 isn’t quite a done deal, it’s a good sign that talks are happening at all.
If Garfield and Dunst both return, it would be strange not to have Maguire. Hopefully, he and the studios will be able to arrange something to make this work. It would be thrilling to see Maguire and Dunst back together on the big screen, and many would love to watch Holland’s Spider-Man interact with Maguire’s.
All of these returns confirm something fans have already known: Spider-Man 3 is taking on the multiverse. The MCU has shown signs of delving into this compelling world for some time now, with the most telling project being 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Doctor Strange himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, will also be a part of Spider-Man 3, and it looks like he’ll be bringing his multiverse chaos with him. At this rate, the MCU’s Spider-Man 3 is shaping up to be a packed film; hopefully, it can handle the weight of all these characters. Odds are, some will have smaller roles than others, and it’ll be interesting to see how Maguire and Dunst factor into it all.
Marvel better reveal some story details soon!
