The Stanford Arts Review presents “Pipes”, where we bring you a miniseries of Stanford musicians in the most unlikely of places — the bathroom. The john’s daily significance in our lives can only be rivaled by its acoustic favorability, and we find it an ideal stage for shower-singers and masterful musicians alike.

I wrote this verse to the song “Montana” by Youth Lagoon, a hauntingly beautiful song that made me think a lot about the importance of nature, adventure, and youthful exploration. At the time I wrote it I was becoming increasingly frustrated with the ways I had become reliant on technology not just for productivity but also for entertainment and escape. Writing this song ended up being somewhat of a therapeutic experience and helped me recommit to spending more time outdoors and more time authentically engaging with my friends and family.
