It’s early afternoon as I arrive at Levin Field – it looks to be a cloudy day. There is a quite bustle as people move about setting up. I take the opportunity to mingle around and catch up with some friends. A few short conversations follow: how’s housing looking for next year, is the stage going to be big enough to fit the step show, why Black Messiah deserves Best R&B Album. I can feel the anticipation masked in everyones’ voices, but soon enough the sun peaks out and the scene gives way to a raucous release of post week 8 angst.
The line up features student performances, local acts, Young Metro himself, and Jeremih. Blackest is a Stanford concert that doesn’t seem so Stanfordy, attracting a diverse crowd of students, alums, friends from neighboring schools, and off campus visitors. A brief escape from the usual drudgery, Blackfest gives us the chance to come together, celebrate, and enjoy some good music. This year proves to be especially jumpin.
