YOUNG THE GIANT – “Mr. Know-It-All” – as described by chloe rickards
The lead singer of Young the Giant is a Stanford alum — it shouldn’t be too hard for Frost to rope them in, right? And, while they might not open with (or even play) “Mr. Know-It-All,” I feel like this song could have been inspired by Sameer Gadhia’s time here.
LORDE – “Green Light” – as described by siena streiber
Maybe it’s just because I’ve only been on this campus for three years, or maybe it’s my increasing inner feminist, but why in the heck haven’t I seen a female headliner at Stanford? For some reason beyond my control America wasn’t ready for a female President, but shouldn’t Stanford be ready for a female headliner? Lorde’s “Green Light” comes from her highly-anticipated album due for release in the near future. If you haven’t heard it yet, how? It’s catchy, has a great beat, and much like “Royals,” easily gets stuck in your head. I think we can all agree it’s time for some lady-love on this campus, and Lorde can give it to us.
BOWLING FOR SOUP – “1985” – as described by phill giliver
In my perfect world, an out-of-touch, 50-something music festival producer, vaguely remembering a drunken conversation he had on July 4th last year with his tweenaged niece, misremembers the name of the band The 1975 (a wildly popular English rock group) and accidentally books noted one-hit-wonder Bowling For Soup (the singers of the song “1985”). Bowling For Soup scrambles to fill a 30 minute headliner spot, including songs off their completely unknown albums “Sorry for Partyin'” and “Drunk Enough to Dance”. It’s an unmitigated disaster, and Bowling For Soup’s dreams of a comeback are decimated. The musical festival producer goes on vacation to the Maldives the following week and doesn’t give a shit.
KEVIN ABSTRACT – “Miserable America” – as described by som-mai nguyen
“My best friend’s racist, my mother’s homophobic/I’m stuck in the closet, I’m so claustrophobic” could be called too on-the-nose in an undergrad creative writing workshop, but Kevin Abstract isn’t just any 20-year-old, still deriving all their artistic confidence from some regional Scholastic Key they got as a high school sophomore. Here’s a boy from the Gulf, he’s black and bisexual (mentioning at the risk of being reductive), and he makes cool music that feels like growing up on the Internet. It feels like early-aughts indie angst-rock—but like, enjoyable.
BEST COAST – “The End” – as described by ena alvarado
During my last two years of high school, I listened to Best Coast’s debut album, Crazy for You, obsessively. Its thirteen songs accompanied me from home to school and back. Too many mini panic attacks and conversations with myself were lived, in the car, alongside Bethany Cosentino’s voice. She helped me fall in love with the West Coast, even though it took several years until I finally set foot in California.
THE FLAMING LIPS — “In the Morning of Magicians” — as described by katie lan
I’ve never actually seen the Flaming Lips live, but I imagine it’s a real trip. Their psychedelic and lush sounds paired with their theatrical stage presence is exactly what I would want for a festival like Frost. The Flaming Lips makes me feel like I’m in a robot-space musical!!
SOLANGE – “Cranes in the Sky” – as described by alejandra salazar
I listen to this song and wonder what it would sound like live. It’s an aching feeling, a yearning impatience that cannot be fully tempered until the day I see Solange Knowles, in all her wonder and magic, standing on a stage before me and thousands more in that pale pink bubblegum jacket. Her head tilts slightly, framed by a wild, gorgeous halo of hair, and she sings. And then, I always wonder, and then–! That pending blank space hangs in the silence, lingering long after the song fades out and my earbuds frizz and pop with leftover static noise.
Damn. At least she’s playing Outside Lands this year.
